Chapter 23 - Spinifex Bombs
âI bet this upsets some of them, Wiram,â said Cambra as they carefully placed a booby trap outside the men's dorm. The next thing he knew there was an enormous explosion and he almost had a fit thinking that Wiram had set off one of his mines - or worse, that he'd blown himself up.
âWe've got the enemy right on us, Cambra. Drop everything, grab your M16 and ammo belts. Follow me.â Wiram ran towards their vehicle which was parked on the other side of the dorm, out of sight of the terrorist convoy.
The two had their weapons ready as Wiram looked around the corner of the building. He could see a smoking Jeep on its side. A convoy of at least ten trucks was lined up behind it. Khaki clad terrorists were establishing a defensive perimeter - he was impressed with their professionalism.
âLook how they've fanned out, well trained. Cambra, you'd better stand over there, open fire when I say so. Make sure you empty your magazine then break contact when I say so. We only get one chance to do this, so make it count. Pour as much fire into them as possible.â
The terrorist NCO's were shouting orders at their squads placing them in strategic defensive positions. A squad was forming up in a skirmish line ready to assault any enemy force that stood in their way.
âDamn,â said Wiram quietly, âjust what we need, professionals. OK, FIRE!â
Both the M16 and the AK47 opened up and the small arms rounds hit and knocked down several terrorists near their trucks. It was not the best of ambushes. The terrorists were expecting something but they didn't know from which direction. Three of the skirmishing squad lay on the road screaming but the rest took positions behind cover.
'Slowly, breathe⦠calm down! Up there by the truck⦠OK⦠now near the dorm. Damn, missed.' Cambra was talking to himself to stay focused. It was hot, stinking hot in the midday sun and perspiration trickled into his eyes stinging them. 'Change magazine⦠back to the shoulder, fire⦠whoo! That was close!' Incoming rounds hit the building beside him and he ducked back.
Wiram had damaged the leading truck engine while firing at its driver and an officer standing beside it. He missed the driver but hit the officer who spun, hitting the side of the truck with such force, that, if the bullets didn't kill him hitting the truck would have.
The remaining members of the terrorist skirmish squad now ran towards them, ducking behind the men's dormitory before Wiram or Cambra could bring their fire onto them. Wiram fired an entire magazine through the paper thin walls and heard a series of screams and shouts. Satisfied he focused back on reloading and then decided it was time to go.
âEmpty your magazine and then get into the truck, Cambra, I'll drive.â He waited for Cambra's M16 to click empty then shouted, âGO!â and they both ran as fast as they could. Enemy small arms fire came at them kicking at their feet and hitting the rear window.
